Gower, Mehus, and McMorris Highlight the Role of Social Support in Offsetting the Path between Childhood Adversity and Adolescent Self-Injury and Suicide
Myriam Forster, PhD, MPH, a former post-doctoral adolescent health fellow, along with HYD-PRC researchers Amy Gower, PhD, Christopher Mehus, PhD, LMFT, and Barbara McMorris, PhD, recently published an article based on findings from a statewide sample of high school students. The article “The Role of Social Support in the Association Between Childhood Adversity and Adolescent Self-injury and Suicide: Findings from a Statewide Sample of High School Students” published in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence can be accessed here.

Gadea Launches Whole Learners© Online Training Program
Abi Gadea, MSW, MPP, HYD-PRC Deputy Director and Co-Developer and Director of the Whole Learners© program has launched a new, online Whole Learners© training program. Five modules provide a deep understanding of early adolescent development, and explore developmentally-tailored, relationship-oriented approaches for teachers and school staff to use in engaging with adolescents. This online training course provides a Certificate of Completion from the U of MN - College of Education and Human Development for up to 10 professional continuing education contact hours. Jordan Receives Grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture
HYD-PRC faculty Cathy Jordan, PhD, LP, received funding from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture to support a project, “Meeting Workforce Needs of the Future: Educational Pathways to Ecosystem Health Preparedness.”

McMorris Awarded Teaching of Social Engagement Award from School of Nursing
HYD-PRC faculty Barb McMorris, PhD, recently received the U of MN School of Nursing’s Teaching of Social Engagement Award. McMorris works closely with communities to effect changes that improve the health and well-being of adolescents. This award recognizes McMorris’ excellence in partnering with organizations to develop and evaluate programs and services that nurture resilience among vulnerable populations of young people.   

Shlafer Featured in Health in All Matters Podcast
HYD-PRC faculty Rebecca Shalfer, PhD, MPH, was featured in the U of MN School of Public Health’s Health in All Matters Podcast, “Episode 5: COVID Affects Us All…Just Not Equally”. This episode describes how some populations are suffering far more than others during the pandemic and particular challenges that face homeless, incarcerated, new immigrants, and people of color. Sieving and HYD-PRC Visiting Scholar Publish on the Effectiveness of Parent Participation in a Technology-Based Adolescent Sexuality Education Program
Monrudee Chokprajakchad, a recent HYD-PRC visiting scholar, along with Renee Sieving RN, PhD, and faculty advisors at Mahidol University in Bangkok Thailand, published findings from Chokprajakchad’s dissertation research in an article titled, “Effectiveness of Parent Participation in a Technology-Based Adolescent Sexuality Education Program: A Randomized Control Trial”. Chokprajakchad refined this sexuality education program for parents during her 6-month study with Sieving at the U of MN. To view this article, click here.
