2022 Summer Institute Brochure

Join us for the 2022 Virtual Adolescent Health Summer Institute!

Sound mental health provides an essential foundation that supports all other aspects of adolescent health and development -- from the formation of friendships and the ability to cope with adversity, to success in school, work, and community life. For many adolescents, disruptions and consequences related to the COVID-19 pandemic -- including school closures, social isolation, family economic hardship, family loss or illness, and reduced access to health care -- have negatively impacted their mental health and well-being. Mental health has long been a major public health challenge, but the pandemic brought mental health issues to the forefront, with more than one third of U.S. high school students experiencing poor mental health during the pandemic.   As we emerge from the pandemic, we have critical opportunities to support adolescents’ mental health, as well as to change aspects of schools, community organizations, healthcare systems and other institutions that shape adolescents’ daily lives, so that all young people can thrive.

During the 2022 Summer Institute, explore patterns and trends in adolescent mental health, utilize developmental, social-ecological, and intersectional lenses to examine young people’s mental well-being, and consider individual-, population- and systems-level approaches to promote youth mental health. Strategize with caring adults – health and social service providers, mental health professionals, counselors, juvenile justice professionals, teachers and school staff – who help young people sustain and reclaim their mental well-being.

Sex Ed for All

May is Sex Ed For All Month

Celebrated each May since 2019, Sex Ed For All Month is an opportunity to raise awareness and call for real investment in sex education in schools and communities across the United States. Sex education should be reflective of youths’ experiences and needs. Equity and access for all is about working together toward sex education for all young people and especially youth of color, LGBTQ+ young people, immigrants, those with lower incomes, those living in rural areas, those with disabilities, and systems-involved youth.

Coordinated by the Sex Education Collaborative and 22 national, regional, and state-based organizations (including the HYD-PRC), Sex Ed For All Month provides an opportunity to adjust the lens through which we have historically viewed adolescent sexual and reproductive health and address more holistically the sex education young people deserve so they can have healthy relationships, make healthy decisions, and have positive health outcomes. Join the conversation by accessing the toolkit and using the hashtag #SexEdForAll

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

The Minnesota Department of Health’s Suicide Prevention Unit has produced a number of resources to bring awareness to mental health. #StayConnected resources were created for teachers, faith leaders, and all community members to use to show support and bring awareness to mental health. You can show support in many ways including at home and at your workplace. Click here to access all of the MDH’s mental health resources.
